S  E  N  A  T  E     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

WHEREAS, Alyssa Silva, daughter of Phil and Dori Silva of Cumberland is a shy but "spunky" 10 year old, who attends 5th grade at John J. McLaughlin Cumberland Hill School. She has a big brother named Adam and a dog named Luck; and

WHEREAS, Although Alyssa is dealing with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1, she doesn't let this disease stop her from enjoying all of the "cool" things in life; and

WHEREAS, Taught at a young age that she was "the little engine that could", Alyssa is involved in many activities, including taking part in school plays, participating in dance recitals, and goaltending for a youth soccer team from her wheelchair. She belongs to the Happy Hearts Girls Club, excels at math and likes to play solitaire on the computer. Most of all, Alyssa loves hanging out with her friends, especially her best friend since kindergarten, Amanda Smith; and

WHEREAS, Alyssa has put her wonderful artistic talent to work by creating her own line of greeting cards. She sells these beautiful cards in local stores through her own company, called W.O.W. which stands for Working on Walking. W.O.W. raises money for Spinal Muscular Atrophy research and Alyssa hopes that this research will soon find a cure. Her dream is that children like herself will be able to walk someday; and

WHEREAS, Alyssa has many philosophies that we should all live by, "To succeed, and if I don't, try and try again", "To be happy with whatever God gives me" and "To help others"; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaims June 5, 2001 as "Alyssa Silva Day" in the State of Rhode Island. We honor and applaud her courage, wisdom and spunk and thank her for being a role model to all the citizens of the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Miss Alyssa Silva.
