### H O U S E&NBSP;&NBSP;&NBSPR E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING APRIL 30, 1997 AS RHODE ISLAND MATH DAY

WHEREAS, Math is defined as "the study of number, form,
arrangement, and associated relationships, using rigorously defined
literal, numerical, and operational symbols"; and

WHEREAS, Mathematics as a language of the Universe illustrates
the myriad ways in which mathematics affects the world around
us. Math is a holistic system of ideas related within topics,
among topics and across disciplines; and

WHEREAS, Math is integrally related to problem solving in real-life
situations, and as one comes to understand mathematics, one becomes
a better problem solver, the beauty and power of mathematics becomes
more apparent; and

WHEREAS, Teachers of mathematics provide an environment which
encourages the use of thought-provoking questions, speculations,
investigations and explorations, and provide opportunities for
student connections to language and symbolism of mathematics;
and

WHEREAS, Students have the opportunity to see schools as places
where important mathematical ideas are used to explore interesting
and relevant problems; and

WHEREAS, The ability to construct meaning, connect ideas, transfer
skills to new situations and view old situations in new ways are
important attributes that mathematically literate students must
possess; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of
Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaim April
30, 1997 as Rhode Island Math Day.
