JOYOUSLY CELEBRATING THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF LEONA P. MARCHAND ON MARCH 30, 2025 |

WHEREAS, Leona P. Marchand was born on March 30, 1925, in Berlin, New |
Hampshire. In the year of Mrs. Marchand's birth, a new Ford Model T cost approximately $295, a |
loaf of bread cost 10 cents, a pound of butter cost 55 cents and a pound of bacon cost 47 cents; |
and |
WHEREAS, The year 1925 was one of great breakthroughs for women's equality in the |
United States, with Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming and Ma Ferguson of Texas becoming the |
first female Governors in United States history; and |
WHEREAS, Mrs. Marchand met the love of her life, the late Alfred Marchand, on a blind |
date. They later married, and raised six children, Christine, Robert, Russell, Kevin, Louise, and |
Timothy in Central Falls; and |
WHEREAS, A dedicated and hardworking woman, Mrs. Marchand tirelessly provided |
for her family and loved ones. Leona worked for more than 25 years at Ann & Hope, and after a |
brief retirement, accepted a position with the Central Falls Public Schools as a food server, a |
position she held until the age of 90; and |
WHEREAS, In her well-earned retirement, Mrs. Marchand enjoys gardening, tending to |
her flower beds, and spending cherished time with her loved ones, especially at a camp in Maine. |
She also makes yearly visits to Berlin, New Hampshire, to visit friends. Additionally, she enjoys |
knitting, cooking, baking, and watching the Hallmark Channel; now, therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
joyously celebrates the 100th Birthday of Leona P. Marchand on March 30, 2025; and be it |
further |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mrs. Leona P. Marchand. |
