S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING JUNE 1-7, 2023, TO BE "NATIONAL CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION AND AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR WEEK" IN RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for men,
women, and most racial and ethnic groups; and
     WHEREAS, In the United States, a person dies every 33 seconds of a heart attack and
someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds; and
     WHEREAS, Approximately 695,000 people in the United States died in 2021 from heart
disease, which represents one out of every five deaths occurring that year; and
     WHEREAS, Annually, approximately 805,000 people in the United States suffer a heart
attack, with one in five of these incidents being silent heart attacks; and
     WHEREAS, About one in twenty Americans have Coronary Artery Disease; and
     WHEREAS, From 2018 to 2019, heart disease cost the United States approximately
$239.9 billion due to the cost of health care services, medicines, and loss of productivity; and
     WHEREAS, Approximately 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in homes;
and
     WHEREAS, In response to the heart disease crisis in the United States, the American
Heart Association, American Red Cross and the National Safety Council worked together to
create National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator Awareness
Week, which the United States Congress unanimously passed on December 13, 2007; and
     WHEREAS, The purpose of National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated
External Defibrillator Week is to spotlight that more lives can be saved if more Americans learn
CPR and how to use an AED, better known as a defibrillator. Quite often, the person you save
will be a loved one; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby proclaims June 1 to 7
of 2023, to be "National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator
Week"; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the American Heart Association.
