RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING MARCH OF 2023 AS “NATIONAL READING MONTH” IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND |

WHEREAS, The National Education Association launched "Read Across America" in |
1998 as a year-round program to celebrate reading; and |
WHEREAS, In honor of Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2nd is designated as “Read Across |
America Day” in the United States. This also commences "Read Across America Week" and the |
month of March as "National Reading Month"; and |
WHEREAS, Numerous efforts and events are organized during this time to inspire love |
of reading among children and to motivate Americans of all ages to read every day; and |
WHEREAS, Community and parental involvement is vital, as research shows that |
children who read regularly, especially with adults, have greater success in school; and |
WHEREAS. Reading is essential to everyday life, both inside and outside of the |
classroom and has innumerable benefits including increasing vocabulary and comprehension |
skills, stimulating brain activity and improving memory, and reducing stress; and |
WHEREAS, Reading is a fundamental cornerstone to individual freedom and |
empowerment, and sharing the power and joy of reading promotes a community of literacy, |
knowledge and empathy; now, therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby recognizes and |
celebrates March of 2023 as “National Reading Month”; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Becky Pringle, President of the National |
Education Association. |
