H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N |
PROCLAIMING APRIL 28, 2022, TO BE "WORKERS' MEMORIAL DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND |

WHEREAS, Workers' Memorial Day takes place each year across the globe on April 28 |
as a day of remembrance for workers killed, disabled or injured while performing their work |
duties, and serves as a call for action to do everything possible to protect the safety and well- |
being of workers and mitigate the possibility of on-the-job injury; and |
WHEREAS, In 1989, the AFL-CIO declared April 28 to be "Workers' Memorial Day" in |
honor, recognition and remembrance of the thousands of working people who are killed or |
injured on the job every year. This date was chosen because it is the day in 1970 when the |
Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 went into effect and promised that every worker has |
a fundamental human right to a safe job and working environment; and |
WHEREAS, The COVID-19 pandemic devastated working families and has highlighted |
just how important safe jobs and working conditions are to every American, Rhode Islander, and |
human being regardless of where they live and work; and |
WHEREAS, The United Nations has recognized Workers' Memorial Day and it is also |
recognized as a national day in many countries including the United States, as well as Australia, |
Argentina, Belgium, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Ireland, Panama, Peru, |
Portugal, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and other nations; now, therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby |
proclaims April 28, 2022, to be "Workers' Memorial Day" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it |
further |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Governor of the State of Rhode |
Island, Daniel J. McKee, and the Rhode Island AFL-CIO President George Nee. |
