S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

SUPPORTING, RECOGNIZING AND KEEPING THE ELEANOR SLATER HOSPITAL/ZAMBARANO OPEN AND OPERATIONAL AND FOR ITS DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, Since 1905, the Eleanor Slater Hospital/Zambarano has been serving the

citizens of the State of Rhode Island by furnishing outstanding health care services to those

Rhode Islanders who are in the greatest need, including geriatric patients, patients with

developmental disabilities, and those with spinal cord injuries; and

WHEREAS, Eleanor Slater Hospital/Zambarano serves as an optimal model for all long-

term care facilities, providing services for individuals living with developmental disabilities and

co-occurring medical conditions; and

WHEREAS, Zambarano cares for many patients on ventilators which requires critical

care medicine. This includes not only specialized equipment but staff who are competent and well

trained in ventilator care, which no other facility in the state is as well-equipped to handle as

Zambarano; and

WHEREAS, The staff at Zambarano work tirelessly to ensure a quality existence for all

patients, and to convey the creditable and commendable efforts that go on each and every day at

the hospital in order to provide comfort to patients' family members. Many of the vulnerable

patients at the site require around-the-clock care from the staff, whose relatives have said become

'like family' to them; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby supports and

recognizes the dedicated and essential services provided at the Eleanor Slater

Hospital/Zambarano and supports all efforts to keep it open as there is no other place in the state

to care for these individuals and extends its sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to the

hospital's staff for their laudable efforts on behalf of all long-term care patients; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby urges continued support for Zambarano in order to

ensure that it remains an exemplary long-term health care facility for the benefit of all Rhode

Islanders; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Governor of the State of Rhode Island, the

Director of the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities,

and Hospitals (BHDDH), and the staff of the Eleanor Slater Hospital/Zambarano Unit.
