| ADOPTION OF THE STATE PLAN ON ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND RELATED DISORDERS |

| WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a fatal, degenerative disease of the brain that impairs |
| cognitive function, memory, and behavior; and |
| WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is not part of the normal aging process; and |
| WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States |
| and the fifth leading cause of death for those over 65 years of age; and |
| WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the only leading cause of death that cannot be |
| prevented, cured, or even slowed; and |
| WHEREAS, An estimated 5.7 million people nationwide have Alzheimer's disease, |
| including 200,000 individuals under the age of 65; and |
| WHEREAS, Rhode Island is projected to have 27,000 individuals with Alzheimer's |
| disease by 2025; and |
| WHEREAS, The General Assembly affirmed the need for a state plan for Alzheimer's |
| disease and related disorders and directed the Long-Term Care Coordinating Council to convene |
| an Alzheimer's disease and related disorders working group (hereafter "working group"), by Joint |
| Resolution during the January Session, A.D. 2012; and |
| WHEREAS, The working group transmitted to the Governor and to the General |
| Assembly a state plan for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders in 2013; and |
| WHEREAS, The working group has commissioned a five year update regarding the |
| important developments in the area of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders; now, therefore |
| be it |
| RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
| hereby recognizes that people with Alzheimer's disease or related disorders and their families |
| must have all of the information and support they need and services delivered as effectively and |
| efficiently as possible; and be it further |
| RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby supports the five year update to the state for |
| Alzheimer's disease and related disorders in the State of Rhode Island as developed by the |
| working group; and be it further |
| RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
| transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Gina Raimondo, Governor of the |
| State of Rhode Island. |
