| PROCLAIMING MAY 5TH THROUGH MAY 11TH, 2019, TO BE "MELANOMA AWARENESS WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND |

| WHEREAS, Skin cancer is a serious problem for people who spend significant time |
| outdoors in the sun; and |
| WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most deadly common form of skin cancer; and |
| WHEREAS, Melanoma rates among Rhode Islanders have been steadily rising in Rhode |
| Island since 1995, with diagnoses increasing by an average rate of 1.5 percent each year; and |
| WHEREAS, Advocacy, increased awareness, promoting ultraviolet light protection, and |
| skin cancer screening will result in a meaningful reduction in the burden of skin cancer; and |
| WHEREAS, Members of The Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode Island, physicians |
| at Brown Dermatology, the Rhode Island Department of Health's Comprehensive Cancer Control |
| Program, and Lifespan Community Health Institute are diligently working cooperatively to |
| accomplish statewide Skin Cancer Prevention and Control strategic objectives; now, therefore be |
| it |
| RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
| hereby proclaims May 5th through May 11th, 2019, to be "Melanoma Awareness Week" in the |
| State of Rhode Island, and encourages all residents to learn more about the prevention and early |
| detection of skin cancer; and be it further |
| RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
| transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to The Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode |
| Island, Brown Dermatology, the Rhode Island Department of Health's Comprehensive Cancer |
| Control Program, and Lifespan Community Health Institute. |
