| PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY, 2019, TO BE "STORM DRAIN AWARENESS MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND |

| WHEREAS, Storm drains carry water away without any treatment. Consequently, any |
| stormwater, leaves, and trash entering a storm drain flows directly to nearby wetlands, streams, |
| ponds, and eventually coastal waters without treatment; and |
| WHEREAS, Water entering storm drains is not treated. This untreated stormwater all |
| goes directly to nearby wetlands, streams, ponds, and eventually the Bay without treatment; and |
| WHEREAS, Stormwater pollution is responsible for beach/shellfish closures and |
| threatens drinking water supplies; and |
| WHEREAS, Careless disposal of trash and recyclables, pet waste, lawn chemicals, |
| household chemicals, and paint impact water quality and the health of the watershed; and |
| WHEREAS, Simple education and awareness generated about the role storm drains play |
| help mitigate these facts; now, therefore be it |
| RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
| hereby proclaims the month of May, 2019, to be "Storm Drain Awareness Month" in the State of |
| Rhode Island and encourages all citizens to join in becoming ambassadors and stewards to storm |
| drains in order to improve water quality and the health of our watersheds; and be it further |
| RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
| transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Devon Kurtz, Executive Director of the |
| Blackstone Heritage Corridor, and Bonnie Combs, Marketing Director of the Blackstone Heritage |
| Corridor. |
