S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY, 2018, TO BE "PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA, WINTER OLYMPICS GAMES MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, The XXIII Winter Olympic Games of the modern era will be held in

PyeongChang County, South Korea, from February 9-25, 2018; and

WHEREAS, According to the Olympic Charter, the goal of Olympism is to place sport at

the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful

society concerned with the preservation of human dignity; and

WHEREAS, The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution supporting the

ideals of "Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic Ideal" and supports

the Olympic Truce aimed to ensure the safe passage and participation of athletes and spectators at

February’s XXIII Olympic Winter Games; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby expresses its hope that the 2018 Winter Olympic Games will encourage peace and

stability in the Korean Peninsula and serve as a catalyst to foster cooperation and prosperity in

East Asia, upholding the spirit of the Olympic Charter; and be it further

RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby proclaims the Month of February, 2018, to be

"PyeongChang, South Korea, Winter Olympic Games Month" in the State of Rhode Island; and

be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the President of the International Olympic

Committee, Dr. Thomas Bach.
