PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY, 2015, TO BE "TICK BORNE DISEASE MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND |

WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced the |
number of newly acquired Lyme disease cases in the United States to be approximately 300,000 |
per year; and |
WHEREAS, These newly adjusted rates of Lyme disease infection range from 4,000 to |
7,000 new cases annually for Rhode Island, which is now ranked the 4th highest rate in the nation; |
and |
WHEREAS, When treatment of Lyme disease is delayed, continuing infection can lead to |
chronic illness, disability or, in rare instances, death; and |
WHEREAS, Education is essential to making the general public, health care |
professionals, employers, educators and insurers more knowledgeable about the debilitating |
effects of tick borne diseases, including Lyme disease; now, therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
hereby proclaims the month of May, 2015, to be "Tick Borne Disease Month" in the State of |
Rhode Island; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Nicole Alexander-Scott, Director Designee, |
Rhode Island Department of Health. |
