H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING MAY 12-16, 2014, AS "BIKE-TO-WORK WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, "Bike-to-Work Week" is celebrated annually across the United States in order to promote the use of bicycles as an option for commuting to work; and
WHEREAS, The "Bike-to-Work" initiative was originated by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956, and Bike-to-Work Week occurs during National Bike Month; and
WHEREAS, Riding a bike to work is the fastest growing form of commuting. The number of people across America who bike to work jumped nearly 61 percent from 2000 to 2012; and
WHEREAS, Bicycle commuting is a safe and healthy alternative to driving an automobile to work each day and it provides economic and environmental benefits to our communities; and
WHEREAS, Widespread bike commuting helps to lessen traffic congestion and noise, reduces associated greenhouse gas emissions, and decreases the use of and dependence upon finite energy sources; and
WHEREAS, Rhode Island has 64 miles of paved bike paths, myriad bike lanes and bike routes, and more than 20 additional miles of paved bike paths currently under design and development; and
WHEREAS, Our state is quickly becoming one of the nation’s most "bike friendly" states and the advantages to our citizenry and communities should be promoted and recognized; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaims May 12-16, 2014, to be "Bike-to-Work Week" in the State of Rhode Island. We furthermore support and encourage all the citizens of our state to participate by giving bike commuting a try; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the President of the League of American Bicyclists.
