E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, It is with heavy hearts that this Senate hereby
commemorates the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing and
extends its deepest sympathies to the families of those whose lives were
tragically altered by the events of April 15, 2013; and
WHEREAS, On April 15, 2013, at approximately 2:50 p.m., two bombs
exploded on Boylston Street near the finish line of the Boston Marathon,
killing and injuring innocent people. What should have been a day of
celebration and triumph turned instead to mayhem and unspeakable suffering. In
an instant, precious lives were lost and life-altering injuries sustained; and
WHEREAS, This cowardly act of terrorism reminded all of us that
there are those in our world who do not believe in the ideals of freedom and
liberty. In the midst and aftermath of this horrific attack, we witnessed just
how resilient and enduring our democratic society is when it is attacked. We
saw first responders and volunteers risking their lives to race towards those
who were injured and in need of immediate help. We witnessed the enormous
strength and courage of those wounded in this attack as they, with the help of
numerous dedicated and talented medical professionals, worked tirelessly to
physically recover as much as possible from their wounds and to rebuild their
lives. Finally, we watched an entire community, from ordinary citizens to
famous baseball players, rally around the victims of this attack and offer all
of their support and encouragement; and
WHEREAS, While the immediate threat stemming from the bombings has
ended, the grieving period for many of the families who lost their loved ones
will continue, and the healing process for some who were injured during the
tragic events remains an on-going reality; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, This this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence Plantations hereby commemorates the one-year anniversary of the
Boston Marathon bombing. We thank the first responders and volunteers for their
bravery in coming to the aid of the injured, and we express our deepest
sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in this attack, and to
those who suffered injuries on the fateful day of April 15, 2013; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized
and directed to transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to The
Honorable Deval Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts, and to The Honorable Martin
J. Walsh, Mayor of Boston.
