S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The purpose of recognizing the month of April as Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month is to raise awareness, promote education, and encourage research of esophageal cancer in the hope of discovering a cure; and
WHEREAS, Esophageal adenocarcinoma is the fastest growing cancer in the western world, where it has increased more than 500 percent in the past 30 years; and
WHEREAS, There are no known underlying causes for esophageal cancer, just risk factors; and
WHEREAS, Many people die of esophageal cancer within the first year of noticing symptoms; and
WHEREAS, Patients whose esophageal cancer has spread only receive treatment towards relieving symptoms, not towards curing the cancer; and
WHEREAS, Survivors of esophageal cancer often suffer a lower quality of life after surgery; and
WHEREAS, Almost all cases of esophageal cancer are fatal, making it one of the deadliest of all cancers; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby joins the Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation in recognizing the Month of April as Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month in the state; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Linda M. Molfesi, President of the Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation.
