80TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOCAL 1329 OF THE INTERNATIONAL
LONGSHOREMEN'S
ASSOCIATION AND COMMEMORATING THE MASTERS OF THE
CRAFT
DOCUMENTARY PHOTO EXHIBIT

WHEREAS, Local 1329 of
the International Longshoremen’s Association (I.L.A.) was
founded in 1933, in
Lopez, and John “Toi” Fernandes; and
WHEREAS, I.L.A. Local
1329 was the first union organized in
of a predominantly
WHEREAS, Contributing greatly to the economy of this state, Members
of Local 1329 of
the I.L.A. loaded and unloaded cargo in the
WHEREAS, Local 1329 was
at the forefront of the national movement for workers’
rights, organizing two years before the passage of the
Wagner Act, which legalized the formation
of unions in the private sector; and
WHEREAS, I.L.A. Local
1329 established a system of seniority in order to assure its
senior members a fair share of the work and hours towards retirement;
and
WHEREAS, The members of Local 1329 fought for improvements on the
docks, such as
safety, job securities, and benefits; and
WHEREAS, Local 1329
played an important role in the 20th century development of the
Port of
emergence of the Ports of Providence and Davisville
as growth centers in
economic recovery plans; and
WHEREAS, This year, 2013, marks the 80th Anniversary of the founding
of Local 1329
and is commemorated by the Masters of the Craft Gallery
of Memory documentary photo exhibit
at City Hall in
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of
Providence Plantations
hereby recognizes the 80th Anniversary of Local 1329 of the I.L.A. and
commemorates the Masters of the Craft Documentary Photo Exhibit;
and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and hereby is
authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Local
1329 of the International
Longshoremen’s Association.
