PROCLAIMING
APRIL 12TH TO BE "LEAGUE DAY AT THE STATE HOUSE 2012"

WHEREAS, The League of
Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that
encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in
government, works to increase
understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public
policy through education and
advocacy; and
WHEREAS, The League of
Women Voters of the
in 1920, celebrated its 92nd anniversary on February 14,
2012, and continues to study and
advocate nationally for issues such as fair elections, open
government, campaign finance reform,
women's rights, and clean air and environmental issues. Currently,
the League is in the process of
a national study on privatization of public services;
and
WHEREAS, The League of
Women Voters of Rhode Island also celebrated its 92nd
anniversary in 2012; has recently completed a two-year statewide
study of and reached consensus
on basic principles for education financing in
process; and is lobbying this legislative session on
redistricting, open records, open meetings,
ethics, election issues, campaign finance reporting and a
woman’s right to choice -- positions all
based on studies and adopted at the state and national
levels. Live broadcasts this fall of non-
partisan Congressional candidate forums on ABC6-TV and RI
Public Radio are being organized
and planned by the Voter Services Committee of the
League; and
WHEREAS, Local Leagues
of Women Voters in
County, and
partisan forums for many
candidates, and holding meetings discussing issues of interest
to members and citizens regarding
the government's role in education, charter schools,
pension reform, and privatization of other
public services; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of
Providence Plantations
hereby acknowledges and declares April 12, 2012, to be “League Day at
the State House 2012”; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is
authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Derry
Riding, President of the League of
Women
