O L U T I O N
RECOGNIZING
MARCH 21, 2012, AS "NATIONAL KICK BUTTS DAY"

WHEREAS, Each year, roughly 1,400 additional children and adolescents
under 18 in
tobacco-related illness; and
WHEREAS, The Campaign
for Tobacco Free Kids’ annual “National Kick Butts Day”
strives to reduce and remove the ability of the tobacco
industry to target children and young
adults with advertising, and urges elected leaders to do
more to protect young people from
tobacco; and
WHEREAS, “National Kick
Butts Day,” hosted by the Rhode Island Tobacco Control
Network (RITCN), is a day of activism when thousands
of youth in every state and around the
world “stand up, speak up, and seize control against Big
Tobacco”; and
WHEREAS, The collective voice of dozens of middle school and high school
age youth
will be raised in outrage at the tactics of Big Tobacco on
March 21, 2012, when the first Annual
“Kicking Butts on Film” PSA Contest winners are
announced at the Rhode Island State House;
now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of
Providence Plantations
hereby encourages and applauds the efforts of the Rhode Island Tobacco
Control Network and its
mission, as the organization provides a forum for demonstrating the
destructive impact of cigarettes and other nicotine products on
tobacco users, both young and old;
and be it further
RESOLVED,
That this House hereby recognizes March 21, 2012, as
“National Kick
Butts Day,” and urges all
citizens to join in raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco and
help prevent more young people from smoking in the State
of
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is
authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Emily
LaPlante, Rhode Island Tobacco
Control Network.
