CELEBRATING
"BIKE-TO-WORK DAY" ON FRIDAY, MAY 20TH, 2011, IN THE STATE OF

WHEREAS, “Bike-to-Work
Day” is celebrated annually across the
to promote the use of bicycles as an option for
commuting to work; and
WHEREAS, Bike-to-Work
Day was originated by the League of American Bicyclists in
1956 and is a part of Bike-to-Work Week, which is in
turn part of National Bike Month; and
WHEREAS, Bicycle
commuting is a safe and healthy alternative to driving an
automobile to work each day and it provides economic and
environmental benefits to our
communities; and
WHEREAS, Widespread bike commuting helps to lessen traffic congestion
and noise,
reduces associated greenhouse gas emissions, and decreases
the use of and dependence upon
finite energy sources; and
WHEREAS,
and bike routes, and 40 additional miles of paved bike
path currently under design; and
WHEREAS, Our state is quickly becoming one of the nation’s most
"bike friendly" states
and the advantages to our citizenry and communities
should be promoted and recognized; now,
therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of
Providence Plantations
hereby proclaims Friday, May 20th, 2011, to be “Bike-to-Work Day” in
the State of
