S O L U T I O N
HONORING SENATOR
DANIEL P. CONNORS FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF

WHEREAS, It is with
regret and sadness that we bid adieu to our good friend and
colleague, The Honorable Daniel P. Connors, who is retiring
from the General Assembly after
fourteen years of devoted service in the Rhode Island Senate;
and
WHEREAS, Senator Connors
was sworn in as the Rhode Island Senator from District 19
on January 7th of 1997. He was a 20-year old college
junior when elected to serve the people of

WHEREAS, Veteran members
of this chamber will recall the great relief when, during
Senator Connors' 21st birthday party, held in Senate
Majority Leader Paul Kelly's office, replete
with cake, balloons, and party hats, he could finally join
in for an "adult beverage;" and
WHEREAS, Senator Connors
has been thought to be one of the brightest members of the
State Senate, but his laid back manner has earned him
the title of "Forrest Gump" on occasion;
and
WHEREAS, Having earned the respect of his peers for his tremendous
diligence and
tenacity in 2008, Connors was elected by his colleagues to
serve as Senate Majority Leader. He
previously served as Deputy President Pro Tempore of the Senate
and was Chairman of the
Committee on Labor and Chairman of
the Committee on Rules. He also
served as a member of
several other Senate committees, including the Committee on
Government Oversight, the
Committee on Finance, and the Committee on Judiciary;
and
WHEREAS, He currently
serves as Chairman-elect of the New England Board of Higher
Education, and previously served as chairman of the
Rhode Island Public Transit Authority Board
of Directors and as a member of the Rhode Island State
Investment Commission; and
WHEREAS, Majority Leader
Connors has been a tenacious advocate on behalf of
protecting our children and the general public from sex
offenders. At the request of Leader
Connors, the General Assembly passed legislation that
requires sex offenders before they leave
prison to be classified by the proper authorities, thereby
making sure neighbors in a community
will receive advanced notification before a registered sex
offender moves into their community;
and
WHEREAS, Senator Connors
was also a leader in the fight to pass “Frank’s Law,” a law
that saves lives by making it safer for bicyclists to
share the road with motor vehicles; and
WHEREAS, Senate Majority
Leader Daniel P. Connors was presented with a
“Legislative Champion” award at the Seventh Annual
Earth Day Breakfast of Champions event
on April 24, 2010. He was recognized for “his leadership
in the movement to protect our
environment and our health,” and for his stalwart support for
public transportation in Rhode
Island; and
WHEREAS, Senator
Connors’ leadership and tireless devotion to the citizens of the
missed; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this Senate of the State of
hereby honors Senator Daniel P. Connors as he concludes his
service to the Rhode Island General
Assembly
and to the people of this state.
We thank him for a job well done, and extend our
sincere wishes for his family and his continued health,
happiness, and success; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is
authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The
Honorable Daniel P. Connors.
