HONORING THE
IN NEWPORT,
RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, For the past ten years, the Newport Gulls have played
baseball in
year and have captured the Fay Vincent Jr. Cup four times,
the only team to accomplish this feat.
The Newport Gulls are currently ranked among the top
five teams nationally for summer
collegiate baseball and are the defending champions, having won
the 2009
Collegiate Baseball League Championship; and
WHEREAS, Summer baseball consists of the top collegiate prospects
from the best
college programs in the
Playing well in a quality summer baseball league is a
path used by many young men towards
achieving their life-long goal of playing Major League
Baseball; and
WHEREAS, In historic Cardines Field, one of
the greatest places to watch a summer
league baseball game, the Newport Gulls provide the local
community with high-quality baseball
in a family-friendly atmosphere. The Newport Gulls are a
non-profit organization, and have
contributed more than $100,000 to the community and local
charities through game-day raffles,
summer camp scholarships, auction items, and team
appearances. In 2006, the
also established a scholarship program benefitting
male and female athletes from
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of
Providence Plantations
hereby honors the Newport Gulls on their visit to the Rhode Island House
of Representatives and celebrates their tenth
anniversary of playing baseball in
Island; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized
and directed to
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Newport
Gulls team owners Chuck Paiva, Chris
Patsos, Ron Westmoreland, Mark Horan, and Greg Fater.
