WELCOMING RUI MANUEL PARENTE CHANCERELLE DE MACHETE TO THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Born on April 7, 1940, in Setúbal, Portugal, Rui Manuel Parente

Chancerelle de Machete is a well-respected citizen of Portugal. He is an accomplished attorney,

humanitarian, advocate, author, and professor; and

WHEREAS, Rui has a law degree from the University of Lisbon. He received the

Calouste Gulbenkian Award for Historical and Juridical Science in 1960. In 1962, he won the

same award for Economic and Political Science. Rui has been a practicing attorney since 1964;

and

     WHEREAS, He was a professor at the Schools of Social Studies, Labor, and Corporate

Studies. He taught Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, and Political Science at the

University of Lisbon Law School. Currently, Rui is a professor at the Universidade Católica,

teaching Administrative Law and Procedure; and

WHEREAS, Rui served as Editor in Chief to the Povo Livre Newspaper. He is a

founding member of SEDES, a civic organization in Portugal. Rui is also a founding member of

the Oliveira Martins Foundation and is a Chairman of the Board of Directors; and

WHEREAS, Rui has always taken an active role in government. He was the Secretary of

State for Emigration in 1975, and was a Minister of Social Affairs from 1976 to 1979 in the Sixth

Provisional Government. Rui was also a Minister of Justice, Deputy Prime Minister, and

Minister of Defense in the Ninth Constitutional Government between 1983 and 1985; and

     WHEREAS, Rui has been an advocate for the Portuguese-American Citizenship Project

for voter registration. He has supported many foundations including the Portuguese American

Scholarship Foundation, Heritage Harbor Museum, Rhode Island Historical Society, and Roger

Williams School of Law, to name a few; and

     WHEREAS, As an author, Rui has published several articles and books; and

     WHEREAS, We are pleased to have Rui Manuel Parente Chancerelle de Machete join us

in the Senate today; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby extends a hearty welcome to Rui Manuel Parente Chancerelle de Machete; and be it

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Rui Manuel Parente Chancerelle de Machete.
