RECOGNIZING THE
HONORABLE STEPHEN D. ALVES FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF

WHEREAS, Our good friend and colleague, Senator Stephen D. Alves, represented the
people of District 9 in the Rhode Island Senate, devoting
sixteen years of service to his
constituents in West Warwick and to the citizens of the State of
WHEREAS, A graduate of the
Financial Advisor at
children, William and Kaitlyn; and
WHEREAS,
Senator Alves was elected to the Rhode Island Senate
in November of 1990.
Earning the respect of his peers, he was appointed
chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and
served as a member of the Constitutional and Regulatory
Issues Committee; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of almost two decades, Senator Alves was an outspoken
advocate on myriad issues. His primary efforts centered on
crafting a state budget that was
“responsible, responsive, and
most of all, realistic.” He worked on legislation to make
prescription medications more affordable for seniors and sponsored
many pro-life efforts. He
championed initiatives to provide veterans with permanent
housing and urgently needed training
programs, to dramatically increase nursing programs at the
state’s public colleges and university,
to expand health insurance coverage to cover hearing
aids, and to improve the state’s nursing
homes, to name just a few; and
WHEREAS, With an irrepressible sense of humor, the “king of
low-numbered license
plates” had an uncanny ability to attract attention from the
news media; and
WHEREAS, Senator Alves always made salient points during deliberations upon
an
issue. He passionately and persistently represented his
constituents, but only once was the threat
of Capitol Police intervention necessary; and
WHEREAS, Never one to pull punches, Senator Alves
always made his opinion known.
Advocates on all sides of an issue appreciated his
candor, his willingness to keep his door open,
and his careful consideration of their points of view;
and
WHEREAS, Senator Alves’ commitment to the community extended far beyond his
service at the State House. He is a member of the Board of
Directors for the
Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Senator Alves’ leadership and tireless devotion to the citizens of
the Ocean
State have earned him our unqualified admiration and respect,
and he is most assuredly missed;
now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this Senate of the State of
hereby thanks The Honorable Stephen Alves
for a job well done, and we extend our sincere
wishes for his continued health, happiness, and success.
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is
authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the
Honorable Stephen D. Alves.
