S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING JUNE 24,
2007 AS "JAMES R. FILKINS DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS,
James R. Filkins, known as “Jim” to his family and many friends, was a
highly
respected and widely admired member of the Jamestown School Committee. He had
served
in a myriad of capacities including clerk, SE-LAC liaison, Melrose SIT liaison
and co-
chair
of the high school review committee; and
WHEREAS,
Jim was formerly a resident of Sterling, Massachusetts, where he had been
an
outstanding art educator and former school committee chairman; and
WHEREAS,
Jim was committed to helping others and serving his community. Sharing
his
love for art, he taught drawing in an afterschool program at the local school.
He was also a
member
of the Jamestown Community Chorus and the Jamestown Men’s Chorus. His talents
were
abundant, and his cheerful demeanor made him a joy to be around; and
WHEREAS,
There is no doubt that Jim Filkins, an honest and steadfast gentleman, left
Rhode
Island a far better place because of his life’s endeavors. His integrity and
determination
enriched
the lives of all who knew him and set a standard for excellence in public
service that is
an
inspiration to us all; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby
express our deepest sympathies to Agnes, Keith, John and Rebecca on the passing
of
James
R. Filkins. We furthermore celebrate his life and his accomplishments by
proclaiming June
24,
2007 to be “James R. Filkins Day” in the State of Rhode Island; and be it
further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to Agnes Filkins and Family.
