J O I N T R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING THE RHODE ISLAND SCHOLARSHIP ALLIANCE

     WHEREAS, In 2006 the Rhode Island General Assembly passed the Rhode Island

Corporate Scholarship Tax Credit in order to enhance educational opportunities available to all

students in this state by allowing businesses to receive a tax credit for making voluntary

scholarship contributions to qualified students; and

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Scholarship Alliance was established in December 2006,

as an alliance of school choice advocates, working to promote the Rhode Island Corporate

Scholarship Tax Credit, and expanded educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged

students in Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Scholarship Alliance acknowledges that every year, many

Rhode Island children are unable to pursue academic success through school choice due to the

high cost of tuition; and

     WHEREAS, In its first year of operation, the Rhode Island Scholarship Alliance has

secured more than $700,000 in corporate scholarship contributions to benefit economically

disadvantaged students in Rhode Island; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence

Plantations hereby recognizes and thanks the Rhode Island Scholarship Alliance for its work in

promoting the Rhode Island Corporate Scholarship Tax Credit, and expanded educational

opportunities for economically disadvantaged students in Rhode Island; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Scholarship Alliance.
