R E S O L U T I O N
CELEBRATING AND
HONORING THE 232ND BIRTHDAY OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY

WHEREAS,
The current United States Army is descended from the Continental Army,
which
was formed on June 14, 1775, before the establishment of the United States, to
meet the
demands
of the Revolutionary War. The United States officially created the United
States Army
on
June 3, 1784, to replace the disbanded Continental Army; and
WHEREAS,
The United States Army is made up of three components: The Active
“Regular
Army”, the Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. Combined, these three
branches
currently have over one million soldiers, with over 500,000 serving in the
Regular
Army,
close to 200,000 serving in the Army Reserve, and approximately 333,000 serving
in the
Army
National Guard; and
WHEREAS,
The United States Army has always served our nation with honor and valor
in
times of peace and peril, and has fought in every American conflict and war,
from the
American
Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, the
Spanish-
American
War, the Philippine-American War; World War I, World War II, Korean War,
Vietnam
War,
and two wars in Iraq;
WHEREAS,
Many of this nation’s greatest military leaders served in the United States
Army
and graduated from West Point. Generals Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh
Sherman
and
Philip Sheridan led the Union Army to victory in the Civil War. During World
War II
America
was blessed with a plethora of great Army Generals including President Dwight
D.
Eisenhower,
George Patton, Douglas MacArthur, Omar Bradley, James Gavin and Matthew
Ridgway.
Recent Army leaders who have served our nation with distinction have included
Colin
Powell,
and Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr.; and
WHEREAS,
The heroism and valor of our nation’s soldiers at places like Yorktown,
Normandy
and Omaha Beach, Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge, in the skies over
Germany
and
Europe, Midway, the Philippines, on submarines in the Pacific Theater,
Guadalcanal, Iwo
Jima,
Heartbreak Ridge, and in the frigid hills of Korea, the jungles of Vietnam, and
the desert of
Iraq,
will never be forgotten. The American Army has always been a liberating Army,
never a
conquering
Army; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence
Plantations hereby celebrates and honors the United States on the occasion of
its
232nd
Birthday on June 14, 2007.
