H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING THE MONTH
OF JULY TO BE "SEABEE MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS,
The Seabees are celebrating their 65th Anniversary in 2007. The Seabees
were
created at Davisville, Rhode Island in 1942 by United States Navy Rear Admiral
Ben
Moreell,
Chief of the Bureau of Yards, in order to meet the immediate needs for overseas
bases
during
World War II; and
WHEREAS,
More than 350,000 Seabees served their nation during World War II,
participating
in virtually every theater of operations, from England and Western Europe to
China,
Burma,
and numerous islands in the Pacific. They worked, often under enemy fire and in
extreme
weather conditions, to construct piers, airfields, hospitals, housing, and
every imaginable
kind
of facility; and
WHEREAS,
The Seabees have served their country during times of peace, and during
war
in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East, Antarctica, and numerous
locations
around
the globe. They have earned a reputation for ingenuity, innovation, and a
"Can Do" spirit
that
is renowned throughout the United States Military and the world; and
WHEREAS,
The Seabee Museum and Memorial Park in North Kingstown, Rhode Island
has
worked tirelessly to raise money for a museum and memorial park, which will
long stand as a
tribute
to the dedication and sacrifice of Seabees, past and future; now, therefore be
it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence
Plantations hereby proclaims the month of July to be "Seabee Month"
in the State of
Rhode
Island. We thank them for their heroic service to our nation in its greatest
hours of need;
and
be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to James Munroe, President of the
Seabee
Museum
and Memorial Park.
