H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
RESPECTFULLY
REQUESTING THAT ALL RHODE ISLAND CITY AND TOWN POLICE DEPARTMENTS ENFORCE
CURRENT HANDICAPPED PARKING LAWS
Introduced By:
Representatives Lima, McNamara, Naughton, and E Coderre
Date Introduced: May 01,
2007
WHEREAS,
For many people with disabilities, their motor vehicle is their lifeline. Their
car
or truck gives them the freedom of movement and the ability to live a full and
complete life.
However,
this freedom is dependent upon having access to handicapped parking spaces; and
WHEREAS,
It is vital to people with physical handicaps and disabilities that they be
able
to
park in designated handicapped parking spaces. Theses spaces are closest to the
entrance of
their
point of destination, and are a vital necessity for folks who are wheelchair
bound or have
great
difficulty walking; and
WHEREAS,
It has come to the attention of the Rhode Island General Assembly that
handicapped
parking spaces quite frequently are being utilized by people unauthorized to
park in
those
spaces. The current state of affairs is unacceptable. The most vulnerable of
our citizenry
need
to be protected by their local city or town police department by having Rhode
Island's
handicapped
parking laws stringently enforced; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence
Plantations hereby respectfully requests that all Rhode Island Police
Departments
enforce
Rhode Island's handicapped parking laws; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and
directed to
transmit
duly certified copies of this resolution to each city and town Police Chief in
the State of
Rhode
Island.
