H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
RESPECTFULLY
REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO INSTITUTE IMMEDIATE CORRECTIVE
MEASURES TO ALLEVIATE THE FLOODING OF
HOPE STREET IN THE SILVER CREEK AREA IN THE TOWN OF BRISTOL

WHEREAS,
On March 9, 2007, a combination of heavy rains, frozen ground and high
tide
created a flooding problem in the Silver Creek area of Bristol; and
WHEREAS,
The flooding caused major roads to become congested or completely
blocked
off, area businesses and a local cemetery were underwater, and rerouting of
traffic
required
Bristol police and fire crews to utilize the area’s bike path as an alternate
vehicular route;
and
WHEREAS,
The flooding problem in the Town of Bristol has been ongoing for more
than
twenty years with no solution in sight. Steps to correct the underlying problem
and reduce
the
impact of the water when it rises are immediately necessary to provide safe
thoroughfares for
those
who live in, or travel through, the Town of Bristol; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence
Plantation hereby urges the Director of the Department of Transportation to
institute
immediate
corrective measures to alleviate the flooding and resultant closure of Hope
Street in
the
Silver Creek area in the Town of Bristol; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Director of the Department of
Transportation.
