H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING JANUARY
9, 2007 TO BE "WOMEN'S CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM AWARENESS DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS,
Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, claiming
the
lives of approximately 41,000 women in the United States last year; and
WHEREAS,
Following the American Cancer Society's recommended guidelines for the
early
detection of breast and cervical cancer improves the chances that these cancers
can be
diagnosed
at an early stage and treated successfully; and
WHEREAS,
The Rhode Island Women's Cancer Screening Program provides free cancer
screenings
to uninsured and underinsured women for breast and cervical cancer, and has
screened
over
17,000 women since the programs inception in 1995; and
WHEREAS,
The American Cancer Society has created a 2007 calendar featuring Rhode
Island
survivors of breast and cervical cancer to increase awareness of the importance
of early
detection
of cancer and to promote the Women's Cancer Screening program; now, therefore
be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence
Plantations hereby proclaims January 9, 2007 to be "Women's Cancer
Screening
Program
Awareness Day" in the State of Rhode Island. We recognize the importance
between
early
detection and regular cancer screening to improving the health and wellness of
all citizens
in
our state; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives hereby welcomes three women featured
in
the American Cancer Society's calendar, Ms. June, Armeather Gibbs from
Providence, Ms.
September,
Elaine Ison from Cranston, and Ms. October, Diane Miner from Wood River
Junction,
who are visiting the General Assembly to commemorate cancer survivorship and
highlight
the importance of early detection of breast and cervical cancer, particularly
among
ethnic
populations and the medically underserved population, two of the highest
at-risk groups for
breast
and cervical cancer. We wish them good health, tremendous success in all their
endeavors,
and
every future happiness, and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to the National Office of the American
Cancer
Society
and the Southern New England Regional Office of the American Cancer Society.
