S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING APRIL 26,
2006 TO BE "CITY AND TOWN CLERK DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, The position of Municipal Clerk is one of the oldest recorded official
public
offices
and can actually be traced back to biblical times. These early public servants,
called
“remembrancers”,
utilized their memories to accumulate, store, and confirm the official public
record
of the times; and
WHEREAS, Today’s Municipal Clerks provide a direct link between the people in
their
communities
and the various branches of local government. They offer access to public
information,
accountability for decision making, and due process or rule of law; and
WHEREAS, Municipal clerks in Rhode Island dedicate countless numbers of hours
providing
invaluable assistance to the people within their communities, as well as
implementing
and
organizing essential community projects; and
WHEREAS, These dedicated workers contribute greatly to improving the quality of
life
for
the citizens of Rhode Island’s cities and towns; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate, therefore, that this state pays tribute to the
career, and
accomplishments
of the men and women who give so much to the integrity, strength, prosperity,
and
well-being of this state; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence
Plantations
hereby
proclaims April 26, 2006 to be “City and Town Clerk Day” to honor and recognize
the
myriad
of contributions made by the clerks of Rhode Island’s cities and towns for the
betterment
of
the citizens of our state; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and
directed to
transmit
duly certified copies of this resolution to the clerk of each of Rhode Island’s
cities and
towns.
