H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
MEMORIALIZING THE
UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO PERMANENTLY BRING THE USS JOHN F. KENNEDY TO THE
STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS,
The USS John F. Kennedy, nicknamed "Big John", was launched on May
27,
1967, and commissioned on September 7, 1968. Originally classified as an Attack
Aircraft
Carrier,
and later reclassified as a Multi-Purpose Aircraft Carrier, the ship was
recently
decommissioned;
and
WHEREAS,
The creation of a museum, honoring the country's naval and aviation
history,
and located at the former Quonset/Davisville naval complex on the Narragansett
Bay, has
long
been a goal of many of Rhode Island's veterans and citizens; and
WHEREAS,
Securing federal financial assistance to permanently locate "Big
John" in
Rhode
Island, and establish a naval museum, for current and future generations of
Rhode
Islanders
to enjoy, would be a vastly enriching accomplishment for our state; now,
therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence
Plantations hereby respectfully requests the United States Congress to
permanently
bring
the USS John F. Kennedy to Rhode Island, and to support federal financial
assistance for
the
establishment of a museum on the vessel; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit
duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island Congressional
Delegation.
