S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N
RESPECTFULLY
REQUESTING THE DIRECTOR OF THE RHODE ISLAND
DEPARTMENT
OF TRANSPORTATION TO CONDUCT A SAFETY REVIEW OF THE
WAMPANOAG
TRAIL

WHEREAS,
Article 1 of the Rhode Island Constitution states “All free governments are
instituted
for the protection, safety, and happiness of the people.” Over the past several
years a
serious
situation has arisen that gives rise to the imminent safety of the citizens of
this state; and
WHEREAS,
Numerous serious and sometimes lethal accidents have occurred on the
Wampanoag
Trail (Route 114), and in particular on the stretch of road between Gate of
Heaven
Cemetery
and the traffic control light at Massassoit Avenue; and
WHEREAS,
It is a primary function of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation to
“maintain
the state’s highways in a safe and serviceable condition”; and
WHEREAS,
A comprehensive study, examining all aspects, including design, entrances
and
exits, posted speeds, traffic controls, guardrails and sightlines in essential
to the goal of
making
Rhode Island’s roadways safe for our citizens and the out-of-town neighbors who
visit
our
beautiful Ocean State; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby
respectfully requests the Director of the Rhode Island Department of
Transportation to
conduct
a comprehensive safety review of the Wampanoag Trail, including but not limited
to the
stretch
of road between Gate of Heaven Cemetery, located in East Providence, and the
traffic
control
light at Massassoit Avenue, located in Barrington; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and direct to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Director of the Rhode Island
Department of
Transportation.
