H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEFIANCE FIRE COMPANY IN BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The Defiance Fire Company in Bristol, Rhode Island got its start on June 7,

1905 when a group of dedicated individuals met in the first floor of a schoolhouse in Bristol and

discussed the need to form a new fire company; and

     WHEREAS, From these humble beginnings the Defiance Fire Company came into being.

First it was officially chartered by the state on January 21, 1913, then under the direction of Chief

Engineer John E. Magee and First Foreman Samuel Young, the Defiance Fire Company moved

into a new fire station, its current location on Hope Street, and left the horse carriage and hose era

and became motorized; and

     WHEREAS, In honor of the 100th Anniversary, a banquet will be held on June 4th to

celebrate the event and the monthly meeting will be moved from the first Wednesday of the

month to June 7th, as a tribute to the founders of the company and to honor all who have served

the Defiance Fire Company; and

     WHEREAS, Over the last one hundred years the members of the Defiance Fire Company

have dedicated themselves to preserving and protecting the lives and property of the citizens of

Bristol. All Bristol residents, past, present and future, owe a debt of gratitude to the people who

dedicated so much of their lives in the service of others; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby celebrates the joyous 100th anniversary of the Defiance Fire

Company in Bristol, Rhode Island, and thanks all current and past members for all they have done

to protect the citizens of Bristol; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Defiance Fire Company of Bristol.
