S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING MARCH 2, 2004 AS "READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Reading is a basic requirement for attaining a quality education and

achieving professional success. It is also a source of pleasure throughout one's life; and

     WHEREAS, Americans must be able to read if the nation is to remain competitive in the

global economy; and

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island should place emphasis on enhancing reading intervention

programs and the need for providing additional resources for reading assistance; and

     WHEREAS, The National Education Association and the Rhode Island NEA have

designated March 2, 2004, the anniversary of the birth of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr.

Seuss, to celebrate reading; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims March 2, 2004 to be "Read Across America Day" in the State of Rhode Island.

We urge the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to encourage teachers,

principals, students and all of the citizens of this state to participate in this day, acknowledging

the great benefits and invaluable knowledge that books provide; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That we recognize and honor Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, for

his success in motivating children to discover the joy of reading and grow into lifelong readers;

and be it further

     RESOLVED, That we induce all parents to read with their children each and every day

for at least thirty 30 minutes, but particularly on "Read Across America Day" to highlight and

celebrate literacy; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Commissioner of Elementary and

Secondary Education for the State of Rhode Island, the President of the Rhode Island NEA and

the National Education Association.
