PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 3, 2004
AS "HEART ON THE HILL DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS,
Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States.
Currently 8,000,000 American
women are suffering with some form of heart disease. Specific
factors that predispose a woman
towards heart problems, include diabetes, previous heart attack,
angina, heart failure, lack of
exercise, uncontrolled high blood pressure, non-white ethnicity, high
cholesterol, and kidney
problems; and
WHEREAS,
February is nationally recognized as American Heart Month. It is an ideal
time to encourage women to pay
attention to their hearts and health; and
WHEREAS,
The Rhode Island Women Legislators Caucus is dedicated to enabling
women with heart disorders to
lead independent, productive, and fulfilling lives; and
WHEREAS,
Education and information on the possible risk factors, public policy, and
prevention programs are key to
keeping women in good health and heart savvy. By increasing
awareness and taking action,
thousands of lives can be saved each year; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence Plantations hereby
proclaims February 3, 2004 to be “Heart on the Hill Day” in the
State of Rhode Island. We urge
the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct
workshops and other special
events to raise awareness of the many health concerns that are
unique to women. We ask all
Rhode Islanders to become actively involved and wear red in
support of family, friends and
neighbors who have suffered from heart disease; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit duly certified copies
of this resolution to the Director of the Department of Health and
Human Services and the
American Heart Association.
