J O I N T R E S O L U T I O N
DECLARING
JUNE AS "RIVERS MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS,
The general assembly recognizes the important role rivers have played in
the
discovery and heritage of Rhode Island; and
WHEREAS,
Rivers are an integral part of our natural environment; and
WHEREAS,
The general assembly, recognizing the importance and significance of rivers
for
environmental, economic and recreation value for the citizens of Rhode Island,
desires to
improve
and preserve the quality of the state’s rivers; and
WHEREAS,
It is important for the citizens of Rhode Island to reflect upon the manner in
which
their activities and lifestyles affect the state’s rivers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED,
That this general assembly of the state of Rhode Island and Providence
Plantations
hereby declares the month of June as “Rivers Month” in the state of Rhode
Island.
This
general assembly also encourages the citizens of Rhode Island to participate
with
organizations
and agencies such as the Rhode Island Rivers Council, the Narragansett Bay
Commission’s
Woonasquatucket River Restoration Initiative and the Department of
Environmental
Management in activities to promote awareness and contribute to the
preservation
of
our rivers; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the secretary of state be and he is hereby authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to Governor Donald L. Carcieri.
