MEMORIALIZING THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES TO SUPPORT THE FLAG PROTECTION AMENDMENT

Introduced By: Representatives Carter, Gallison, Moffitt, T Brien, and Rose

     Date Introduced: May 27, 2003

WHEREAS, The American flag flies on the moon and sits atop Mount Everest. It is

proudly displayed at sporting events, parades, schools, front porches, public buildings, and on the

graves of our loved ones and our heroes. The flag is how America signs her name and is a

unifying symbol of nationalism; and

WHEREAS, Many Americans are moved to tears by the sight of our flag, and many who

have lost loved ones during times of war feel appropriately that attacks on the flag are attacks on

what they have sacrificed and what has made our nation great; and

WHEREAS, Symbols have an indispensable place in a democracy and the American flag

is a sacred symbol of our nation. When we view the flag we think of liberty, freedom, pride and

all that is best in the American character; and

WHEREAS, In 1989, the American people lost a fundamental right, a right we possessed

since the birth of this great nation, the right to protect our flag from desecration; and

WHEREAS, The Flag Protection Amendment is a restorative measure. It would amend

the Constitution to give Congress the power to enact legislation banning physical desecration of

the flag; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby respectfully requests the Honorable Jack Reed, the Honorable

Lincoln Chaffee, and the Senate of the United States to support the passage of the Flag Protection

Amendment to the United States Constitution; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Delegation to the United

States Senate.
