CELEBRATING
MAY 21, 2003 AS "LATINOS ON THE HILL DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE
ISLAND

WHEREAS,
Latinos are people of various racial backgrounds whose ancestors resided
in
Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. They come from 22 different countries
of origin,
forming
a community that has brought great hope and enthusiasm to Rhode Island; and
WHEREAS,
This rising Latin wave is changing the way the state of Rhode Island looks,
feels,
thinks, eats, dances and votes; and
WHEREAS,
Latino leaders often mention that one of the greatest strengths of this
community
is its continued efforts to organize itself and attain visibility and power
within the
state.
The Latino people also embody important qualities such as loyalty, creativity,
a second
language
and a strong work ethic; and
WHEREAS,
Latinos personify the hard work, dedication, vision and perseverance that
immigrants
have traditionally brought to this country. They are rapidly becoming an
economic
force
and a significant voice; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby
proclaims May 21, 2003 to be “Latinos On The Hill Day” in the state of Rhode
Island;
and
be it further
RESOLVED,
That we celebrate the achievements of the Latino Community and thank
them
for their ongoing dedication to building a brighter and stronger future for all
the citizens of
the
state of Rhode Island; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Latino Civic Fund.
