URGING
THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO CONVENE A HIGH PROFILE
EDUCATION
SUMMIT TO IMPROVE ALL THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS,
The mission of the statement of the State Board of Regents and the State
Department
of Education is a noble and lofty commitment to provide reform and leadership
in the
area
of public education. It is now time for this mission statement to be
implemented at the
middle
school level through aggressive leadership and vision that can ensure
collaboration and
the
ability to implement an action plan; and
WHEREAS,
The Department of Education needs to take the necessary tangible steps that
will
help all middle schools meet the challenges of becoming high performing and
improving
schools;
and
WHEREAS,
The Department of Education is urged to convene a high profile summit of
the
state’s political, business, and education establishments. Make the examination
of the key
aspects
and components of middle level education the concentrated focus of the summit.
Such an
event
would finally bring attention to the unique role of middle schools in the K-12
education
continuum.
A well-attended summit would better educate all of our state’s leaders about
the
special
role middle level education plays in producing a better public school education
for
students
upon high school graduation. It will also provide middle school educators with
an
opportunity
to share their expertise and to provide valuable insight from their perspective
regarding
how to improve education in Rhode Island; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence
Plantations hereby strongly urges the Department of Education to convene a high
profile
education summit to improve all the middle schools in Rhode Island; and be it
further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Department of Education.
