S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING
A SISTER STATE ALLIANCE WITH THE PROVINCE OF TAIWAN,
REPUBLIC
OF CHINA

WHEREAS,
It was in Pawtucket, Rhode Island that Samuel Slater began the American
Industrial
Revolution with the construction of the first successful textile mill in 1793.
Henceforth
the
State of Rhode Island has grown as a center for technological and industrial
development,
spurred
by an historical spirit of entrepreneurship and work ethic; and
WHEREAS,
The Province of Taiwan is recognized as a leader in economic development
and
technological expertise supported by an industrious and creative citizenry; and
WHEREAS,
The people of the State of Rhode and the Province of Taiwan have enjoyed
amicable
relations over many years through commercial, educational and cultural
exchanges. A
Sister
State-Province relationship will foster increased trade, tourism,
communications, cultural,
educational,
professional, commercial and scientific exchange between the two communities.
Mutually
beneficial interchanges, understanding and friendship will be fostered by such
an
alliance;
now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That the Senate of the State of Rhode Island recognizes the attachment
with
the Province of Taiwan by the strongest ties of friendship, kindred, and
interest; and be it
further
RESOLVED,
That the Senate of the State of Rhode Island and the Province of Taiwan
recognize
the complementarities of their interests, activities, and objectives; and be it
further
RESOLVED,
That the Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
proclaims
a Sister State Alliance with the Province of Taiwan, Republic of China. The two
States
are
united in the firm belief that the bond between the Province of Taiwan and the
State of Rhode
Island
will strengthen each other culturally, economically, and intellectually. By
pooling ideas,
resources
and vision, the future of Taiwan and Rhode Island’s economic, social and
cultural
development
will be fortified from this day forward; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of state be and he hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Taipei Economic and Cultural
Representative
Office in the United States (TECRO), the principle representative office of the
Republic
of China on Taiwan in the United States.
