S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING
APRIL 6, 2003 AS "ANNE M. SYLVIA DAY"

WHEREAS,
April 6, 2003 has been marked as “Anne M. Sylvia Day” in the State of
Rhode
Island; and
WHEREAS,
Anne M. Sylvia was born on April 21, 1904 in Fall River, Massachusetts.
She
is the daughter of the late Patrick and Mary McLynch; and
WHEREAS,
April 22, 1926 in the Town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Anne married her
soulmate
Myles Cameron Sylvia; and
WHEREAS,
Before the Hurricane of 1938, Anne and Myles owned and operated Anne’s
Cove
Restaurant at Sakonnet Point Golf Club, where Anne worked as a Pastry Chef and
Manager;
and
WHEREAS,
Living most of her life in the Town of Little Compton, Anne and her
husband
Myles raised four wonderful children who proclaim her as being “the best mom
ever.”
An
extension of that love, Anne has ten grandchildren and eighteen
great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS,
As Anne celebrates her life of ninety-nine years as the oldest resident of
Little
Compton, she becomes the twenty-sixth citizen of the town to own and carry the
Boston
Post
Cane; and
WHEREAS,
The Boston Post Cane, originating back to August 2, 1909, was awarded to
the
oldest “male” citizen in the Town; until 1994 when the Town Council voted to
dispense with
tradition
and award the “cane” to the oldest living resident; and
WHEREAS,
The Boston Post Cane was manufactured by J.F. Fradley & Co. of New
York,
at the time this company was the leading manufacturer of the finest cane in the
country.
The
stick is carefully selected of Gaboon Ebony from the Congo in Africa, and the
head is made
of
rolled 14 karat gold; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED,
That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby
recognizes April 6, 2003 as “Anne M. Sylvia Day”; and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to
transmit
a duly certified copy of this resolution to Anne M. Sylvia.
