PROBLEM GAMBLING AWARENESS
WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS,
Although the majority of Americans gamble responsibly and without
problems, approximately six to
nine million Americans suffer from gambling problems in a given
year; and
WHEREAS,
The Rhode Island Council on Problem Gambling, an affiliate of the
National Council on Problem
Gambling, is working with the Rhode Island gambling industry and
the Rhode Island problem
gambling treatment providers to increase public awareness of problem
and pathological gambling; and
WHEREAS,
The Rhode Island Council on Problem Gambling seeks to increase the
availability of treatment for
problem and pathological gamblers and their families and to
encourage research for
education and prevention; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED,
That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby proclaims March 10th to
March 14th, 2003 as the "First Annual Rhode Island Problem
Gambling Awareness Week";
and be it further
RESOLVED,
That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy
of this resolution to the Rhode Island Lottery, The Rhode Island
Council on Problem Gambling,
CODAC Problem Gambling Recovery Program, the Rhode Island
Hospital Gambling Treatment
Program, the Rhode Island Problem Gambling Hotline, Lincoln
Park and Newport Grand Jai
