1 | WHEREAS, On May 22, 2026, Generation Citizen New England hosted its annual in- |
2 | person Rhode Island Civics Day at the Rhode Island State House, gathering nearly 200 civic- |
3 | minded middle and high school students to act as community problem solvers and changemakers; |
4 | and |
5 | WHEREAS, This historic occasion marked the very first year that Thompson Middle |
6 | School participated in the Generation Citizen programming and proudly sent its students to the |
7 | State House to engage with state leaders and present their community-based civics projects; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Under the exceptional leadership, guidance, and dedication of their teacher, |
9 | Tara Mello, the students of Thompson Middle School embraced the principles of experiential |
10 | civics education, effectively preparing themselves to meet the civic literacy proficiency |
11 | requirements of our State; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The outstanding caliber of Thompson Middle School's debut participation |
13 | was highlighted by a student team winning the prestigious Top Middle School Award for their |
14 | project, demonstrating extraordinary initiative and community vision; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The specific projects and the exemplary students who participated in Rhode |
16 | Island Civics Day include: |
17 | "Turning an Empty Space into a Community Place" (Winner of the Top Middle |
18 | School Project): Jadaleis Capo, David Plowden, and Liliana Pullice; and |
19 | "School Substance Abuse Program": Jayden Clarke, Olivia Jimenez, and Teagan |

6 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby heartily congratulates |
7 | the students of Thompson Middle School and their teacher, Tara Mello, for their inspiring |
8 | participation in the 2026 Rhode Island Civics Day and celebrates the Top Middle School Award |
9 | recipients for their exceptional work; and be it further |
10 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
11 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Thompson Middle School Teacher, Tara Mello, |
12 | and the Principal of Thompson Middle School. |
