RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING JUNE 14, 2026 AS "NATIONAL FLAG DAY" IN | |
THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, June 14th is observed as Flag Day each year to commemorate the adoption |
2 | of the United States Flag by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777; and |
3 | WHEREAS, 2026 is the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and is the |
4 | 249th anniversary of our nation's adoption of the United States Flag; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The first national observance of Flag Day took place 100 years after the |
6 | original resolution, on June 14, 1877; and |
7 | WHEREAS, President Woodrow Wilson issued a 1916 proclamation for the national |
8 | observance of Flag Day on the 14th of June; and |
9 | WHEREAS, On August 3, 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of |
10 | Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman; and |
11 | WHEREAS, The Congress, by Joint Resolution, requested that the President issue an |
12 | annual proclamation calling for its observance and for the display of the flag of the United States |
13 | on all Federal Government buildings; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The Congress also requested by a Joint Resolution, approved on June 9, |
15 | 1966, that the President annually issue a proclamation designating the week in which June 14 |
16 | occurs as "National Flag Week" and called upon all citizens of the United States to display the |
17 | flag during the week; and |
18 | WHEREAS, The custom of issuing a Presidential Proclamation to hoist the flag with |
19 | pride continues to this day; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The American Flag embodies the enduring spirit of our country, symbolizes |
2 | the principles for which our Republic stands, and acts as a beacon of freedom, hope, and |
3 | opportunity wherever it is flown; now, therefore be it |
4 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby recognizes and |
5 | celebrates June 14, 2026, as "National Flag Day" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
7 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the National Flag Day Foundation. |
