S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONDEMNING POLITICAL VIOLENCE AND EXPRESSING SYMPATHY TO THE

FAMILIES OF THE HONORABLE SPEAKER EMERITA MELISSA HORTMAN AND THE

HONORABLE STATE SENATOR JOHN HOFFMAN

     WHEREAS, America was founded on the principles of political and religious freedom,

2

with the right to engage in debate a cornerstone of our democracy, and tolerance an essential

3

component; and

4

     WHEREAS, Americans are proud to live in a country where differences are addressed

5

through debate, not violence; and

6

     WHEREAS, Devastated and heartbroken, Minnesotans and all Americans learned of the

7

tragic violence on Saturday, June 14th, as the Hortman and Hoffman families, were violently

8

killed and wounded at their homes, in a horrific, targeted, and "politically motivated" shooting;

9

and

10

     WHEREAS, Getting shot for ones' beliefs is a sickening and cowardly act of violence, is

11

never a legitimate means of expressing dissent, and is unequivocally condemnable to all

12

Americans; now, therefore be it

13

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby expresses outrage and

14

condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the political violence that took the life of the

15

Honorable Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and the attempted

16

assassination and wounding of the Honorable State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

17

We, moreover, extend deepest sympathy to the Hortman and Hoffman children and families, and

18

the people of the State of Minnesota; and be it further

19

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Tim Walz, Governor of the State

2

of Minnesota and the Honorable Lisa Demuth, Minnesota Speaker of the House.
