EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY

     WHEREAS, The LGBTQIA+ community is an integral part of Rhode Island’s

2

population; and

3

     WHEREAS, The LGBTQIA+ community has fought relentlessly for inclusion and

4

equality, yet LGBTQIA+ people still experience harassment and discrimination based on their

5

sexual orientation and gender identity locally, nationally and internationally; and

6

     WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island, which was founded on the principle of individual

7

freedom, celebrates the diversity of its people and their right to live out loud, free of

8

discrimination, fear, and prejudice; and

9

     WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island remains committed to protecting the civil rights

10

of the LGBTQIA+ community; and

11

     WHEREAS, Transgender and Nonbinary Rhode Islanders are facing threats to their very

12

existence and this Rhode Island State Senate will continue to strengthen its commitment to

13

ensuring dignity and full access to public life; and

14

     WHEREAS, LGBTQIA+ people, people of color, and particularly trans women of color,

15

face greater disparities in the areas of health, housing, and criminal justice and are many times

16

more likely to be the victims of fatal violence; and

17

     WHEREAS, Every human being has the right to love freely and live their lives openly as

18

who they are; now, therefore be it

19

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby proclaims its solidarity

20

with and expresses its support for Rhode Island’s LGBTQIA + community; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Governor of the State of Rhode Island, the

3

Honorable Daniel McKee.
