S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING AND THANKING THE HONORABLE MARTHA BALL FOR HER 50 YEARS

OF SERVICE TO THE TOWN OF NEW SHOREHAM

     WHEREAS, Martha Ball has been involved in the governance of the Town of New

2

Shoreham for over 50 years, covering a broad range of roles starting in the early 1980s; and

3

     WHEREAS, Councilwoman Ball served on the Town Council for 21 years in total during

4

two major periods from 1991 to 2004 and 2016 to 2024, and as First Warden from 2001 to 2004;

5

and

6

     WHEREAS, She started her public service career in the Finance Department in 1978 and

7

served as Town Treasurer from 1981 to 1990; and

8

     WHEREAS, Martha Ball also served on the Zoning Board from 1980 to 1992 and was

9

Chair until 1991; and

10

     WHEREAS, She also was the clerk and deeply engaged in the sewer plant construction

11

and operations from 1976 to 2000; and

12

     WHEREAS, Her public service also extends to numerous other positions including her

13

service on the Historic District Commission; the Conservation Committee; the Hodge Acquisition

14

Team; Island Light & Power; the Tourism Council; the Washington County Regional Planning

15

Council; the Water District; the Ball O’Brien Planning & Management Committee; the 250th

16

Anniversary Committee; the Commission on Motor Vehicles for Hire; the Density Discussion

17

Panel; the Fire/Police Station Trustees; the Housing Board; the Planning Board as a Town

18

Council Representative; and as an Assistant Moderator; and

19

     WHEREAS, Martha’s contribution has not only been her prodigious body of work, but

also her counsel and her knowledge of Island history has been and remains irreplaceable, and she

2

will surely be called upon by future Town Councils for her extraordinary breadth of experience

3

and recollection, now, therefore be it

4

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby sincerely thanks

5

Martha Ball for her long-term participation, perspective and true commitment to the well-being of

6

Block Island and the Town of New Shoreham; and be it further

7

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

8

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Martha Ball.
