CONGRATULATING THE BLOCK ISLAND HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE COASTAL PREP CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

WHEREAS, When people think of Block Island, they think of rides on the ferry, beautiful beaches, bed and breakfasts, and the Mohegan Bluffs; and

WHEREAS, But now, thanks to the high school's basketball team, you can add "Home of the Champions" as the Dolphins of Block Island High School won their first ever high school championship on Friday March 5, 1999; and

WHEREAS, Led by Head Coach Chris Logan, the Dolphins captured the title with a 67-56 victory over Prout in the Coastal Prep Conference championship game; and

WHEREAS, The team consist of eleven members, but on this night they had a twelfth -- 150 people (20% of the entire winter population) came by ferry and school bus to cheer their team on. They even had cheerleaders after finding a box of unused uniforms; and

WHEREAS, The improvement in this team has been phenomenal. Until two years ago the team had never won more than one or two games. But after having a league on the Island this summer, the Dolphins were ready -- so ready that they on the regular season title; and

WHEREAS, Jumping out to a 10 point lead early, Block Island overcame some foul trouble and a strong performance from Prout's Matt Morocco to secure the victory. Leading the way was Jacob Szabo with 18 points, followed by Ryan Mitchell with 15, Rob Closter with 12, and Kyle Draper with 10; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Block Island High School Dolphins on winning the Coastal Prep Conference Championship and this Senate also wishes Coach Chris Logan and all the players the very best of luck in all their future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Block Island High School.
