CONGRATULATING JEANETTE TAKAMURA ON HER APPOINTMENT AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR AGING IN THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

WHEREAS, Jeanette C. Takamura, Ph.D., a third generation Japanese American, is a native of Honolulu, Hawaii and a graduate of the University of Hawaii, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Masters of Social Work degree. She also earned a Ph.D. from Brandeis University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Takamura has served as the First Deputy Director of the Hawaii Department of Health. Prior to that, she served as Director of the Hawaii Executive Office on Aging from 1987-1994. While Director, she developed numerous programs to prepare a very diverse Hawaiian population for an aging society; and

WHEREAS, Among the numerous national advisory councils that she has served on are: the 1995 White House Conference on Aging Advisory Board, the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Units on Aging, and the American Society on Aging; and

WHEREAS, On September 2, 1997, this wonderful lady was rewarded by being selected by President Clinton to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Aging in the Department of Health. She was recently confirmed by the U.S. Senate; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Dr. Jeanette C. Takamura on her appointment as Assistant Secretary for Aging and also congratulates her husband, Carl, Executive Director of the Hawaii Business Roundtable and her daughter, Mari Leigh. We wish Dr. Takamura the very best of luck in her new position; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Jeanette C. Takamura.
